THE SPEAKERS

Anabella Rondina

Anabella Rondina graduated from the Industrial Design School at the University of Buenos Aires with a postgraduate degree in Strategic Design Management. She has taught at the University of Buenos Aires since 1994, and has been a Professor of Industrial Design since 2001.

Craig Kesson

Craig Kesson is the Director of Policy and Strategy in the City of Cape Town government. He has responsibility for citywide policy and strategy development and alignment; corporate transversal management; executive monitoring and evaluation; and external relations.

Carlos Scheliga

Carlos Scheliga is Engineer and Industrial Designer, post graduated in Industrial Management and MBA, acting in both areas for more than 20 years.

Dale Dutton

Dale is an independent software application and integration developer who has used design as the foundation to the approach in system process optimization and automation.

DR HESTER Du plessis

Dr Hester du Plessis holds a PhD in Philosophy from UNISA's Department of African Philosophy. She is the Faculty Head: Humanity, at Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA). She was previously employed as a Senior Research Specialist (Science Communication Research) in the Research Use and Impact Assessment (RIA) unit at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) of South Africa.

Ezio Manzini

For more than two decades Ezio Manzini has been working in the field of design for sustainability. Recently, he focussed his interests on social innovation and started DESIS, an international design network for social innovation and sustainability.

Edgar Pieterse

Edgar Pieterse holds the SARChI Chair in Urban Policy. He is founding director of the African Centre for Cities (ACC) and is professor in the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics, both at the University of Cape Town. ACC is emerging as the preeminent urban research centre on the African continent.

Erica Elk

Erica Elk is the executive director of the Cape Craft & Design Institute (CCDI), which she was appointed to establish in 2001. A visual artist by training, she has, in her professional career, worked as a writer, designer and strategic project manager across a range of platforms in the arts, culture and development arena.

GABRIEL MOTHIBEDI

Gabriel Mothibedi is a Communications Design consultant/practitioner and lecturer of design at the University of Botswana. He has over ten years’ experience as a design practitioner with a clientele base that ranges from telecommunications companies and retail stores to non-profit organisations, fashion and lifestyle companies.

GISELE Murphy

Gisele Raulik Murphy gained her degree in Graphic Design from the Federal University of Parana (Brazil), obtained a Masters in Design Strategy and Innovation from Brunel University (UK), and her PhD on Design Policy from the University of Wales (UK). Gisele has worked for design centres both in Brazil (Centro Brasil Design) and the UK (Design Council and Design Wales).

Ian Gourley

Ian Gourley is Chief Creative Officer of the Barrows Group of companies a privately held Marketing at Retail Services Company, with 550 employees spread across 5 operating companies, located in London, New York, Sao Paulo, Singapore and Durban, each servicing their respective region.

Johan Schepers

With a background working in start-ups, management consulting, and large multinationals - Johan is privilege to have experienced the challenges and joys of designing services from within these unique business environments. He is passionate about the intersection of people, business strategy, design and technology - which is essential today for the success in the service-driven economy.

Laura Lee

Laura is an architect and Professor of Architecture most notably at Carnegie Mellon University in the USA where she served as Head from 2004 – 2008. Laura has also designed and developed intercultural design courses, curricula and programs and projects at Carnegie Mellon University and abroad, conducting projects, studios and workshops in Adelaide, Antwerp, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Doha, Gdansk, Istanbul, Rome and Zurich.

Lorraine Ambole

Lorraine Amollo Ambole attained her first degree in industrial design in 2003 from the University of Nairobi in Kenya. She then worked in the field of product and jewellery design before returning to university to complete an M.A in Design.

Lou Yongqi

Dr. Lou Yongqi is the Dean of and a Professor at the College of Design and Innovation at Tongji University, the Executive Vice Director of the Sino-Finnish Center at Tongji University and a visiting professor at the School of Art, Design and Architecture at the Aalto University in Finland. In addition, he is the Vice President of CUMULUS, the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media.

Ludo Campbell-reid

Ludo Campbell-Reid is Auckland Council’s first ever Design Champion. He is accountable for design excellence in council’s policies, plans and projects, working with the private sector to achieve exemplary design outcomes and promoting a design-led city agenda. Auckland Council is the largest Unitary Authority in Australasia with assets over $32B and an operating budget over $3B.

Michael Thomson

Michael Thomson is the Founder and Director of Design Connect. He works internationally as an independent design strategist and advisor, emphasising design as a strategy for growth. A former Board Member of Icsid, Michael was the creator and Programme Director of ‘Shaping the Global Design Agenda’, the first international Design Policy conference held in Torino WDC in 2008.

Monica Newton

Monica Newton currently heads up the portfolio within which design, and other creative industry sector development, is located at the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC). She joined the DAC in 2013, after heading up the National Arts Council as the CEO and lecturing in arts management at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Mugendi K M'Rithaa

Mugendi M'Rithaa is a Kenyan born industrial designer, educator and researcher at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He holds postgraduate qualifications in industrial design and higher education, as well as a doctorate in universal design.

Nkhensani Nkosi

Having travelled throughout Africa as the host and spokesperson for MNET’s Face of Africa, Nkhensani Nkosi, inspired, and passionate about issues of identity, launched Stoned Cherrie, a modern day articulation of what it means to be African in the 21st century.

Pradyumna Vyas

Pradyumna Vyas has a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay and has over 27 years of professional and teaching experience in various spheres of design. He has worked for the faculty of Industrial Design at the National Institute of Design (NID) for the last 22 years and has a keen interest in design for social and sustainable development.

Professor Alpay Er

Professor Alpay Er is the Department Head of Industrial Design. He studied industrial design at the Middle East Technical University (METU), and completed his PhD at the Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK in 1994. He worked in the Department of Industrial Product Design at Istanbul Technical Universitesi (ITU), where he served as the chairperson between 2006 and 2013.

Ralitsa Debrah

Ralitsa is a design educator and currently undertaking her doctoral studies in the Faculty of Informatics and Design (FID) at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Her research interests are in Design, IT and Health Informatics.

Ricardo Mejia

Ricardo Mejia is a designer with vast international experience in a number of spheres. His know-how is derived from being an independent consultant, an advisor for the governmental sector, an entrepreneur in his own design firms, a director of research development and innovation at departments in the private sector as well as from serving as a researcher and professor at different universities.

Richie Moalosi

Richie Moalosi is an Associate Professor and Head of Department for the Industrial Design and Technology Department at the University of Botswana. He holds a PhD from Queensland University of Technology, Australia and MA in Design from the University of Wolverhampton, UK. He has more than 15 years’ teaching experience at university level and teaches courses in the area of design research.

Srini R. Srinivasan

Srini Srinivasan is the CEO of LUMIUM, an award winning creative design company based in Silicon Valley, USA and India. LUMIUM designs products and experiences for the medical field, the consumer electronics and mobile industries as well as for industrial and household use. The company has successfully executed over 250 product designs for global customers including Fortune-500 corporations.

Tasos Calantzis

Tasos is the CEO of Terrestrial, a consultancy which creates breakthrough products, services, processes and experiences for global companies like Motorola, P&G, BP and Philips.

Ulrich Meyer-hollings

Ulrich is Director Strategy & Innovation at ...XYZ Design and has extensive experience in managing large-scale strategic projects in the decision-driven innovation space. He regularly engages with corporate clients in order to create a deeper understanding of how design-thinking adds value to their innovation & growth activities. Ulrich has also set up various companies that operate in the strategic design and innovation consulting space.
